General Davie Chapter, NSDAR

Serving Durham, North Carolina since 1911

Welcome!

The General Davie Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), is located in Durham, North Carolina. The women who make up our membership are of varied backgrounds and come from all walks of life, yet we share a common bond of tracing our ancestry back to those who helped gain our nation’s independence. We are committed to honoring our nation’s past by serving our communities today.

Founded in 1890, DAR is one of the largest women’s lineage-based, patriotic non-profit organizations in the world. Since our founding, more than one million members have carried out our mission.

We are an organization both steeped in history as well as focused on the future – a vibrant service organization recognized around the world. The four women who founded the DAR helped to form our lasting mission of promoting three key areas: historic preservation, education, and patriotism. As we continue to pursue our original principles, we apply the values of our ancestors and build on the foundation of DAR’s founders to accomplish important work today.

We Are a Service Organization

Our members participate in a wide array of pursuits and events within the framework of our mission of historic preservation, patriotism, and education. Service is the underlying component of most of our activities. The Daughters of the American Revolution is, above all else, a service organization.  To honor our ancestors who fought for our nation’s independence, we are committed to volunteer service as a means to better our local communities. Last year, our chapter logged over 10,000 hours of service.  We work with numerous non-profit agencies, especially ones that serve children and veterans.

Historic Preservation

Our members recognize the importance of preserving history by working to preserve genealogical data and ancestry, supporting various historical sites, participating in wreath-laying opportunities, and celebrating commemorative events. We invite women of all backgrounds to join us in our efforts to preserve our heritage for future generations.

Education

The chapter participates wholeheartedly in our Community Classroom Committee initiative, American History Essay contests, Constitution Week, the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, General Davie Chapter, NSDAR, scholarships, Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) awards, meetings, workshops, forums, living history events, and conferences. Our members are also actively involved in promoting literacy through volunteer work and service projects.

Patriotism

We honor patriotism through service projects designed to support our active-duty military and veterans including Durham Veterans Administration Medical Center activities, Vietnam War veterans’ commemorations, and Wreaths Across America. Our programs and meetings provide opportunities throughout the year to learn more about supporting veterans, history, and heritage.
